Introducing Female Students to Range of Careers in Construction
As part of the Young Women at Work Day 2009, Bouygues UK hosted a number of female students from two Tower Hamlets' girls schools to highlight the range of career opportunities available to women in construction.
The event was a joint initiative between Tower Hamlets Council and the Primary Care Trust and its aim was to provide young women with the opportunity to learn about the range of job opportunities available locally, particularly in areas in which women are traditionally under-represented.
The students visited Bouygues UK's Waterloo Head Office where they met a range of female employees to illustrate the breadth of roles being undertaken by women at the company. This included the company's Technical Director, Senior Project Manager and Quality & Environment Manager.
The introductions were followed by an overview of Bouygues UK's £240 million BSF programme for Tower Hamlets Council, before the group headed to one of the first schools in the borough to benefit from the programme - Bethnal Green Technology College in Mile End. Here the girls received a tour of the school where the part rebuild and part refurbishment works are well underway.
This was a fantastic opportunity to show young women from the borough the variety of different roles in construction and the number of those roles being carried out by women. Bouygues UK works in close partnership with Tower Hamlets to provide job opportunities and apprenticeships to local residents and, with its long history of workforce diversity, the company strives to make these opportunities equally attractive to both men and women.
