Plans for New Dagenham Library Development Unveiled to Local Library Users
On Wednesday 17 March, future users of the new Dagenham Library Development received an exclusive preview of the £17 million scheme which is due to open its doors to the community in Autumn this year.
A number of the borough's regular library users were joined by Councillor Mick McCarthy, Cabinet Member for Regeneration, for a tour of the new library which is just a few months away from completion.
The tour included a walk through and explanation of the new development which comprises a library, a One Stop Shop and retail and affordable housing, forming the cornerstone of the Heathway's regeneration.
Cllr McCarthy said, “This is a wonderful building with everything under one roof. I am very pleased that local people will soon be able to enjoy and take advantage of the excellent facilities that will be available to them.”
The occasion was hosted by scheme development partners Bouygues Development and Southern Housing Group plus Design and Build contractor Bouygues UK. The scheme's partners were keen for future library users to see the scale of the work in progress prior to the official opening in a few months' time.
With the construction of the development due for completion by Bouygues UK at the end of April, the group was able to get a first glance of the new library prior to its fit out and an overview of the range of resources that will be installed once the external construction is complete. They were also given a glimpse of the new housing development by Southern Housing Group.
The new scheme, designed by Architecture PLB, will provide:
• Extensive library services
• Outstanding IT facilities
• 82 affordable residential units
• Community meeting rooms
• Council One Stop Shop to make it easy to access services
• Retail unit
Dominique Lambrecht, Bouygues UK Director, said:
“It's very exciting to be reaching completion of a scheme that will bring so many benefits to the local community. The new library offers an impressive range of facilities and will undoubtedly be a great boost for Dagenham Heathway. We are very proud to be a part of this milestone project for the regeneration of Dagenham Heathway.”
Stéphane Slama-Royer, Director of Bouygues Development said:
“We are really proud to be part of this landmark project in Barking and Dagenham which illustrates how our original development model can address Local Authorities' development issues. This is a very important project for Bouygues Development's expansion in the UK.”
Tom Dacey, Chief Executive of Southern Housing said:
“It's a pleasure to mark the end of construction at Dagenham Heathway Library. Our partnership with Bouygues UK and the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham represents significant investment in the regeneration of Dagenham Heathway.
“As a leading affordable housing provider, Southern Housing Group will own and manage the 82 affordable homes which make up the newly christened Church Elm Court. We're proud to add this to our successes in providing new mixed tenure homes in the Borough.”
