Bethnal Green Technology College

The design objective for our redevelopment of Bethnal Green Technology College was to create a unified facility with a strong identity for pupils and the wider community.

Central to the vision for the college was the desire to create a transformational educational environment with improved ecological values.

With poor access, limited learning space and restricted movement in and around the existing building, the specialist technology college was in urgent need of improvement. This was especially true of the ICT facilities, which were at the heart of the school’s vision for the future. Outdoor play and recreational areas also needed remodelling, as they were becoming increasingly unfit for purpose.

Designed by Nightingale Associates architects, the development involved a combination of refurbishment and extension works. The existing school occupied most of the available development site, so the project’s logistics required careful consideration, both in terms of design and construction.

We created a central area at the heart of the school which linked all existing buildings, resolving circulation issues for the new school environment. The retained buildings maintain an historical link for the school, and provide a prominent and identifiable entrance for students and community members. The space within the original Victorian building has been transformed to maximise flexibility and the learning models envisaged by the school.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the legacy that has been created here,” said Mark Keary, Head Teacher at the college. “The refurbishment will provide opportunities for students in years to come. This project has been far more than just building work for us. It’s given the school a spectacular transformation.”
