Committed to a ‘zero accident’ performance
We are certified to OHSAS 18001, and through our robust Health & Safety Policy, we have created a structure that encourages our people to keep finding safer processes. By motivating our expert teams to innovate and by making sure health and safety is the cornerstone of our training and mentoring programmes, we ensure we deliver best practice.
Nurturing empowered, energised teams
We have an industry-leading approach to safety, and we take the health of our team just as seriously. We are dedicated to the wellbeing of every member of our team, through our positive and passionate team spirit, our culture based on empowerment and our career development programmes. The result of this dedication is a team that works with passion and pride to achieve excellence in all aspects of construction.
Working well together
As active members of leading industry groups, we use our expertise to promote debate and influence new initiatives. Our Head of Corporate Safety, Health and Environment chairs the London and South East Working Well Together (WWT) group. WWT is a nationwide government-funded initiative which sees major contractors in the UK construction industry collaborate to promote best practice and on-site safety. We are also working on developments with the United Kingdom Contractors Group, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, East Anglia Construction Health and Safety and London Construction Health and Safety Groups.
Behavioural safety
Our Safety, Health & Environment (SHE) report card system reports and helps reduce near miss and safe/unsafe acts and conditions. The system alerts our employees to potentially unsafe situations and enables preventative action to be implemented immediately. It offers the chance to demonstrate personal responsibility and share knowledge, as employees work together to decide on the required action. Reports are tracked, and trends are analysed to create strategies for safety awareness and accident prevention. The system is also used to record observations made during health and safety reviews.
5@11
Our 5@11 initiative encourages safe behaviour at a time which is statistically a peak time for accidents and sends a daily message about the importance of safety. Each day at 11am, everyone on our sites stops work and takes five minutes to focus on the health and safety elements in their immediate vicinity. First introduced at North Middlesex University Hospital, 5@11 has since been adopted across all our UK and Group construction sites, with a significant positive impact.
Campaigning against addiction
Our Europe-wide safety campaign tackles the risks posed on site through alcohol and drug addiction. Over 10,000 staff attended the campaign launch, and considerable resources were devoted to making our staff more aware of the adverse effects of drugs and alcohol addiction.
