Delivering Social Value at Exeter: A Strong Start with More to Come

26/02/2026

Bouygues UK was appointed by UPP as lead contractor for this landmark scheme at the University of Exeter, which will provide high-quality facilities designed to accommodate 1,849 students and to support learning, research and the wider student experience. While the project is still in its early stages, our commitment to providing value to the community has been embedded from day one, and we are already seeing positive outcomes.

Engaging Young People and Inspiring Careers

Engagement with local schools has already begun, with Bouygues UK team attending career fairs and supporting interview practice sessions. These early interactions have opened the door to further planned activities, including construction industry workshops that will give students a clearer understanding of career pathways within the sector.

Developing emerging talent remains a priority. Since September, we have welcomed a degree apprentice and two management trainees working towards their HNC qualifications. In addition, we are launching T Level placements welcoming three students to gain hands-on experience with our project team.

“Starting our social value initiative in Exeter this September, we’ve had fantastic engagement from both the community and local businesses. It’s been inspiring to see everyone come together, and thanks to this collaboration, we’ve been able to start supporting others in meaningful ways. We’re excited about the positive impact we’re already seeing and look forward to building even stronger partnerships moving forward.”

Victoria Haddow, Bouygues UK, Social Value Advisor

“I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to begin my journey in construction with Bouygues UK – Learning from other employees of a company at the forefront of the industry has given me valuable insights that I’m sure will stay with me for the rest of my career.”

Building Partnerships and Skills for the Future

A key focus to date has been our growing partnership with Exeter College. Working collaboratively, we have identified opportunities to support shared social value and skills objectives, creating a pipeline of initiatives that will scale as construction activity increases. With site cabins now fully operational, robust systems are in place to monitor and record workforce data, including apprenticeships, trainees and local employment, ensuring we can clearly measure the impact of our employment and training commitments.

Making a Difference Beyond Construction

During the Christmas period, Bouygues UK supported two local initiatives delivering festive events for vulnerable community members and students. Through donations and fundraising, our teams helped provide meals for more than 200 people, supporting those who may otherwise have struggled during the festive season.

“We are extremely grateful for Bouygues UK’s support in making this event possible. It made a real difference, and the community truly appreciated it. Thanks to Bouygues UK, we were able to serve a full Christmas dinner with drinks and dessert to all our guests. Thank you so much for helping our community.”

Looking Ahead

While these achievements mark a strong start, this is only the beginning. As the University of Exeter project progresses, Bouygues UK alongside UPP is committed to expanding its community and student value initiatives, deepening local partnerships and continuing to create lasting positive impact.

We look forward to sharing further updates as the project evolves.
