Not only is Pentre Awel the first development of its scope and size in Wales, but it is also one of the highest valued schemes the council has ever undertaken.

Located within 83-acres of land on the Llanelli coastline, the scheme will provide world-class medical research and health care delivery and support and encourage people to lead active and healthy lives creating over 1,800 jobs and boosting the local economy by £467million over the next 15 years.

Pentre Awel is one of nine major projects under the Swansea Bay City Deal which is being funded by the UK Government, the Welsh Government, the public sector and the private sector.

Estimated to complete in the summer of 2024, Bouygues UK’s construction of this project will include integrated care and physical rehabilitation facilities, a well-being skills centre, and a new state-of-the-art leisure centre, along with education, research and business development space.

The research and development will help to push the boundaries of understanding of what it means to live well. Pentre Awel will be home to big science and small start-ups, established businesses and new kids on the block. All working in partnership with universities and colleges and the health board to make life better.

The scheme also features a clinical research and delivery centre. This will enable Hywel Dda University Health Board to expand its research and medical engineering provision by focusing on community level clinical trials, linked to facilities on site; and provide multi-disciplinary care closer to home for a wide range of community-focused services.

Externally, Pentre Awel will include landscaped outdoor public spaces for recreation, walking and cycling.

The state-of-the-art new leisure centre which will incorporate:

  • 25-metre eight-lane swimming pool and learner pool offering traditional lane swimming and learn to swim classes, as well as fun activities with water-based slides, inflatables and wet assault courses for people of all ages and abilities.
  • Eight-court sports hall providing top-class facilities for a range of indoor sports, including netball competition standard courts.
  • Cutting-edge gym.
  • Dance, spin and multi-purpose studios.
  • Hydrotherapy pool funded by charitable donations and available for use by NHS patients.

Bouygues UK was appointed to design and build Zone One following an extensive tendering process via the South West Wales Regional Contractors Framework. The contract has a key focus on social value to ensure significant employment and training opportunities for local people during the construction phase.

Pentre Awel is one of a number of projects being carried out as part of wider council plans for the regeneration of Llanelli. Later phases of the scheme include a hotel, a range of social and affordable housing, assisted living accommodation and a nursing home.

The housing-led Transforming Tyisha project provides a vital link between Pentre Awel and Llanelli town centre, with millions of pounds being invested throughout the area to create a thriving and more resilient local community and to improve the appearance of the main town centre to attract more commercial interest and footfall.
